Bernhard Bartsch, born in 1975, has spent half of his life in Asia. In his teens, he went to school in Hong Kong for six years. From 1999 on he lived for several years in Beijing. Nowadays he is working as "Senior Expert" for the Bertelsmann Foundation in Gütersloh.

Bartsch studied Chinese, Economics, Politics and Journalism in Hamburg, Beijing and London. He spent two years on a scholarship at the Beijing Film Academy and earned a Masters degree from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). His career as a journalist started in the Beijing bureau auf German business weekly „Wirtschaftswoche“. Since 2003, he has been working as a freelance correspondent for various German language publications, including newspapers „Frankfurter Rundschau“, „Berliner Zeitung“ and „Neue Zürcher Zeitung“ as well as business magazine „brand eins“.

Besides China, Bartsch also wrote about Japan as well as South and North Korea. His articles covered a wide range of topics, with a strong focus on features and analysis on political, social, economic and cultural issues.
